If you ever get swollen feet or legs, then you should watch this important video because this swelling can be a warning sign of severe health issues related to your heart, brain, muscles, kidneys, liver, and other vital organs.
As we age, blood flow & circulation decrease.
At the same time, swelling – also known as edema increases.
What Is Edema
Edema is the medical term for water retention, which happens when excess fluid builds in your tissues.
This can typically be seen in your feet, ankles, and legs because gravity pulls the water down.
When your body is healthy and has youthful blood flow and circulation, your body will push the water back up and down and thus, there won’t be this water build-up and swelling.
This Edema is bad for a variety of reasons.
This could mean that your body’s lymphatic system isn’t functioning properly. This means bacteria and waste will build up in your body. This has been linked to cancer.
Edema can also mean that you have high blood pressure and thus, your kidneys aren’t functioning properly.
Unlike your liver which can regenerate, your kidneys can’t. This can lead to kidney failure.
Speaking of the liver, Edema is also linked to liver damage. This is why alcoholics typically have a lot of edema because they have weak livers.
Another problem with edema is that it’s linked to high blood sugar levels, which can lead to diabetes.
Edema is also linked to high stress levels and an increase in stress hormones such as cortisol.
When cortisol levels are high, your youth hormones dramatically decline – such as testosterone, estrogen, and growth hormone.
Obviously this is bad because it accelerates aging.
At the same time, as cortisol levels increase, so does insulin and blood sugar levels.
All of this can lead to weight gain.
Which then leads to more edema.
As you can see, it’s not a simple problem of “my feet and legs are swollen because I’m just retaining water”
This is a clear sign that your body is not functioning properly – things are breaking down and you’re dying much faster.
Causes Of Edema & Poor Blood Flow
There are many causes of edema and poor blood flow.
Such as lack of exercise, sitting or standing too long, poor diet, weight gain, unhealthy organs, poor sleep and so forth.
I’ll make a more detailed video about these lifestyle factors in a future video.
However, today’s focus will be on nutrients you can take, to help reduce the swelling in your legs, ankles, and feet. While also improving your blood flow.
Nutrients To Reduce Edema
Potassium
Potassium is a mineral that acts as a diuretic and thus, reduces fluid retention. It opposes sodium which is salt.
Most people have a diet high in salt because they eat a lot of processed foods and used condiments, which are all super high in sodium.
At the same time, most people eat very little foods that are high in potassium, so there’s a big imbalance in these electrolyte minerals.
Also, if you get foot cramps, that can be due to a lack of potassium in your diet… Which is something my mom had dealt with.
You should focus on eating foods higher in potassium, such as leafy green vegetables and root vegetables such as potatoes.
Try to reduce your sodium intake as well.
And make sure you’re drinking plenty of water.
You can also take a potassium supplement. They come in 99 mg pills. Take 1 – 3 daily.
Vitamin D
Vitamin D has so many benefits. Vitamin D is technically not a vitamin, but a hormone – that’s why it’s so powerful.
Most of us are deficient or have sub-optimal vitamin D levels.
This includes myself, who is outside in the sun daily – which is where vitamin D is made from – sunlight.
So, I suggest taking a vitamin D supplement. Take Vitamin D3 and take it with K2 to balance out these two essential vitamins.
I’ve noticed most people do well with 2000-5000 units of vitamin D3 daily, combined with K2. Some need as many as 10,000 units.
I personally take 5000 in the summer and 10000 in the winter.
Blood Flow Nutrients
There are specific nutrients – such as herbs, vitamins, and amino acids that help improve blood flow and circulation.
They also help strengthen your arteries and capillaries and make them more pliable and flexible.
Such as:
- Horse Chest Nut
- Ginkgo
- Grape seed
- Beetroot
- Pine Back
- L Carnitine
And a few others.
You can take a product called Blood Flow Optimizer that has all of these ingredients, including Vitamin D3 & K2
This is what my parents and I have been taking for about 20 years.
One veggie pill does it all. Simple, easy, and convenient.
Vitamin C
These are the 3 best supplemental nutrients for improving blood flow and reducing swelling.
However, I’ll give you an extra bonus and that’s Vitamin C
I love Vitamin C because it has so many health benefits. It’s good for your skin, hair, collagen, immune system, brain, heart, muscles, and yes, blood flow and swelling.
Most people aren’t getting enough Vitamin C in my opinion.
Yes, about 100 mg is 100% of the RDA to prevent scurvy, but that’s not our goal today.
We want optimal levels of vitamin C
It’s found mainly in citrus fruits. However, you’ll never get an adequate amount of fruits or vegetables. Nor do I suggest drinking fruit juice, which is all sugar.
I suggest taking 500 mg of Vitamin C, 3x daily with food.
I personally take 3,000-5,000 mg daily. I know it’s high for many people.
But, I almost never get sick and I know this is a big reason for it.
Summary
These are the 3 best solutions in my opinion. There are lots of other things you can take – such as lowering inflammation, taking fish oil, magnesium and so forth.
But I’ve listed the most important ones since most people don’t want to be taking a handful of pills daily.
And don’t forget – you still need to improve your lifestyle…
The simplest thing is to lose weight and walk at least an hour a day. I walk 20 min, 3x daily. First thing in the morning and the other 2 times are after a meal.
Anyone can walk, so please don’t make excuses.
So, please take action on what you’ve discovered today because edema and swelling on your legs and feet is a massive warning sign that your body is very unhealthy.
